Qunoot in the Fajr Prayer is only for Calamities
By His Eminence The Great Scholar
Shaikh Abdul-Azeez ibn Baz

I have learned that the dua or Qunoot in the prayer is to be made only for calamities and catastrophies, I believe this and hold it to be true but if I was with a community that made this dua during the fajr prayer in the masjid in which I pray should I oppose them and not make the dua with them or remain with them in it?

There is nothing preventing you from staying with them and advising them as some of the people of knowledge hold the opinion that the qunoot or dua in fajr is a legislated practice and they use some hadeeth that have been narrated to support that although they are all weak.  The truth is that the prophet SAW did make this dua or qunoot during the fajr prayer, maghrib, Isha, and the remaining prayers for calamities only when something happened that was a cause of fear or evil for the Muslims and he would pray to Allah upon the one who was oppressing the Muslims or attacking them, likewise he would pray for the weak Muslims salvation from the evil of their enemy.  As for continuously performing this dua as a regular practice in the fajr prayer then this is in opposition to the religion and the correct position is leaving it off.  But you can advise them, you and your brothers can guide them to the people of knowledge so that they can be taught that the qunoot in the fajr prayer is not legislated except for catastrophes and calamities.
