The Different Types of Hypocrisy

Q: In this day and age hypocrisy has become widespread, its people many, and their ways of fighting Islam and the Muslims numerous. It would be great if you could shed some light on the dangers of hypocrisy and clarify its different types, mentioning some of the hypocrite's qualities in order to warn the Muslims from them.
A: The dangers of hypocrisy are very great and evil along with its many people. Allah has clarified their characteristics in His noble book in surat Baqarah etc. just as His prophet did. Allah the Glorified said regarding them,
وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يَقُولُ آمَنَّا بِاللّهِ وَبِالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ وَمَا هُم بِمُؤْمِنِينَ. يُخَادِعُونَ اللّهَ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَمَا يَخْدَعُونَ إِلاَّ أَنفُسَهُم وَمَا يَشْعُرُونَ. فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ فَزَادَهُمُ اللّهُ مَرَضاً وَلَهُم عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْذِبُونَ.
And of mankind, there are some (hypocrites) who say: "We believe in Allah and the Last Day" while in fact they believe not. They (think to) deceive Allah and those who believe, while they only deceive themselves, and perceive (it) not! In their hearts is a disease (of doubt and hypocrisy) and Allah has increased their disease. A painful torment is theirs because they used to tell lies. (Al-Baqarah 2:8-10)
Along with the verses following that and He said in surat Nisa,
إِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِينَ يُخَادِعُونَ اللّهَ وَهُوَ خَادِعُهُمْ وَإِذَا قَامُواْ إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ قَامُواْ كُسَالَى يُرَآؤُونَ النَّاسَ وَلاَ يَذْكُرُونَ اللّهَ إِلاَّ قَلِيلاً. مُّذَبْذَبِينَ بَيْنَ ذَلِكَ لاَ إِلَى هَـؤُلاء وَلاَ إِلَى هَـؤُلاء...
Verily, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but it is He Who deceives them. And when they stand up for As-Salât (the prayer), they stand with laziness and to be seen of men, and they do not remember Allah but little. (They are) swaying between this and that, belonging neither to these nor to those, … (An-Nisa 4:143)
He also mentioned their characteristics in surat Taubah etc.
In conclusion, they claim Islam and take on manners which oppose that claim and harm the Muslims just as Allah has mentioned in the previous and other verses.
Hypocrisy is of two types; hypocrisy of belief and action. That which Allah mentioned regarding the characteristics of the hypocrites in surat Baqarah and Nisa is the major hypocrisy of belief. They are disbelievers more so than the Jews and Christians and Idol worshippers due to their danger and hidden affair from the people and Allah has informed us that they will be in the lowest level of the fire on the day of resurrection. As for the hypocrisy of action or deed then it is the manners of the hypocrites that some display while having faith in Allah, His messenger, and the last day such as lying, betrayal, laziness when it comes to praying in congregation. Likewise from their characteristics is what has been mentioned in an authentic hadeeth that the prophet said, "there are three signs of a hypocrite; when he speaks he lies, if he makes an oath he breaks it, and when he is entrusted with something he betrays that trust" and his statement, "The night and dawn prayers are difficult on the hypocrites, if they only knew what they contained of reward they would attend them even if they had to crawl". There are many verses and hadeeth that have come with this meaning.
It is a must upon every believing male and female to beware of these characteristics and qualities and what aids one with that is reflecting over what Allah has mentioned in his book regarding them along with that has been authentically reported in the Sunnah.
Allah is the One we ask to grant understanding in the religion for all of the Muslims, firmness upon it, and cautiousness from all that opposes the religion, be it imitation of the enemies' manner or deeds. He is the best to ask.
