Major Sins are expiated with Sincere Repentance
By The Great Scholar His Eminence
Shaikh Abdul-Azeez ibn Baz
Q: Please benefit is regarding the issue of expiating major sins, is repentance a must or do righteous acts such as the prayer expiate them without repentance? May Allah reward you.
A: The evidence from the book and the pure Sunnah show that the major sins are expiated by sincere repentance and that the one who commits such acts is under the will of Allah if that person dies as a Muslim while having committed them (without repentance) due to His statement,
If you avoid the great sins which you are forbidden to do, We shall remit from you your (small) sins, and admit you to a Noble Entrance (i.e. Paradise). And those who invoke not any other ilâh (god) along with Allah, nor kill such life as Allah has forbidden, except for just cause, nor commit illegal sexual intercourse and whoever does this shall receive the punishment. The torment will be doubled to him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein in disgrace; Except those who repent and believe (in Islamic Monotheism), and do righteous deeds…(Al-Furqan 25:68-70) Verily, Allah forgives not that partners should be set up with him in worship, but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He pleases… (An-Nisa 4:48)
Likewise in accordance with the statement of the prophet (صلى اللّه عليه وسلم), "the five prayers, the Friday prayer to the next Friday prayer, and from Ramadan to Ramadan are an expiation for what occurs between them if you refrain from the major sins" which was reported in Muslim. There are many verses and ahadeeth that contain this meaning.
From this it is known that the general verses and hadeeth regarding expiation of sin with righteous action are restricted by certain specific texts with refraining from major sins which is a Islamic principle with the people of knowledge.
Success is with Allah. Peace and blessings are upon our prophet Muhammad, his family, and companions.
