Question: Oh Noble Sheikh, if a person belches or yawns is there a specific remembrance that they should say?
Answer: No
If a person belches or yawns there is no remembrance that should be said, and this is in contrast to what is done by the commoners. Because the common person when he belches he says, all praises belong to Allah, and they say, we praise Allah for every situation. But it has not been narrated that belching is a reason for praising Allah.
Similarly if the common person yawns he will say, I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan. And this has no basis, and it has not been reported that the Prophet peace and blessings are upon him, used to do this.
But perhaps someone will say, is not belching a blessing? And Allah deserves to be praised for blessings.
We say, of course it is a blessing, but it has not been reported that the Prophet peace and blessings are upon him used to praise Allah if he belched. And if it has not been reported that he did so then it is not legislated to do so based upon a principle known to the scholars.
This principle is, every cause or reason that was present during the time of the Messenger of Allah peace and blessings are upon him and he did not an action for it then it is not the sunnah. Because the actions of the Prophet peace and blessings are upon him is the sunnah and his leaving off an action is also the sunnah.
Therefore belching was present during the time of the Prophet peace and blessings are upon him and he did not praise Allah for belching. Therefore leaving off praising Allah for belching is the sunnah.
The same is true for seeking refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan upon yawning. And perhaps someone may say, did not the Messenger of Allah peace and blessings are upon him say that yawning is from Satan. And Allah the Exalted said, “And if a suggestion from Satan should come to you, then seek refuge in Allah” (Chapter 7 verse 200)
Then we say, what is meant by ‘if a suggestion from Satan comes to you’, is if you have an urge to commit a sin or to leave off an obligation then seek refuge in Allah from Satan. Because Satan is the one who command with evil and lewdness. ‘Satan threatens you with poverty and commands you to commit lewdness’. (Chapter 2 verse 268)
Therefore if you get an urge to do evil seek refuge with Allah. As for yawning then the Messenger peace and blessings are upon him, said, ‘Verily yawning is from Satan therefore if one of you yawns let him suppress it as much as he is able and if he is not able then let him place his hand over his mouth.
And he did not say, ‘if one of you yawns then seek refuge with Allah’; even though he said yawning is from Satan. So this is proof that seeking refuge with Allah from Satan when yawning is not from the sunnah.
