Question:
The people have differed concerning praying the Sunna prayers while shortening the prayers during travel. Some of the people said that it is recommended to pray the Sunna prayers, and some say that it is not recommended because you have shortened the obligatory prayers. So what is your view concerning this; also what about the extra prayers in general such as the night prayer?
Answer:
It’s the sunna for the traveler to leave off the sunna prayer for Dhur, Maghrib, and Isha, while praying the sunna for the Fajr; and this is following the sunna of the Prophet peace and blessing are upon him. It is also legislated for him to make the night prayer and the witr prayer while traveling; because the Prophet peace and blessings are upon him used to do this. In a like fashion all the extra prayers that have a reason like the sunna of Duha and the sunna of wudu and the eclipse prayer.
It is also legislated for him the prostration for recitation and the prayer for greeting the masjid if he enters the masjid to pray or for another need then he should greet the masjid.
